The emu is an Australian native bird mostly found in dry remote plains such as the heart of the Australian outback, this is so they have enough room to run, running at about 50 km/hour. Emus are flightless birds, belonging to the group called ratites (flightless running birds with flat breast bones). One factor to why emus can’t fly is due to their size, the male emu can reach a height of 2 metres and reach 3metres when they are at full pace of running.
Emus have strong powerful legs, simple coarse feathers which enables them to cope with weather changes and conditions. They have a diet which consist of a variety of leaves, grasses, fruits, native plants and insects, their diet depends on what season of is for example in summer and spring they usually eat flowers and seeds. Due to their size, emus also have a very powerful call that can be heard from 100 metres away, their sound is like a deep throated drumming noise, which they make by using their tracheal pouch in their windpipe. |
