The Bungle Bungle or Bungle Bungle range is a sandstone landform located in the Purnululu National Park in the Kimberly region, north, Western Australia. The Bungle Bungle have been around for 350 million years and can be classified as one of the world’s most outstanding geographical features for its unusual shape, size and colours. The Bungle Bungle was inhabited by Australian indigenous tribe of the Kiji people who had lived in the Bungle Bungle area for over 20 000 years. The Kiji tribe believed due to dreamtime stories that these rock figures were made by the rainbow serpent as she slithered across the landscape.
But however these distinctive shaped rocks were made by the uplift and erosion during the past millions of years .The Bungle Bungle was originally one large rock (somewhat like Uluru) had weak areas due to movement and weathering erosion, such as wet rains, winds, freezes and summer heat, and caused more cracks in the large rock to eventually create the Bungle Bungle. Today they rise up to 578 m (above sea level). The Bungle Bungle have been around for millions of years but was not discovered by white man until the 1980’s even though the rock figures were clearly visible from the air. But without tracks and trails was nearly impossible to find. The Bungle Bungle Kimberly region was classified a national park (Purnululu national park) in 1987. |
