Lake Eyre is the largest lake in Australia, largest salt lake in the world and 13th largest lake in the world and is the lowest point in Australia reaching 15 m below sea level. Lake Eyre also has some of the rarest ecosystems on the planet and has great significance to the indigenous and non -indigenous people of Australia. Lake Eyre is located in northern region of South Australia and extends into some parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland. Lake Eyre was the home to the Arabunna people of indigenous of Australia for thousands of years and still means great significance to them, but also helped European settlement in the 1860’s even though it is one of the driest parts of Australia.
During the continental drift of Gondwanaland Australia had an underwater basin, that stretched across now day Queensland to approximately the location of Lake Eyre. It is believed that where Lake Eyre is, was a ditch as the water slowly evaporated around the ditch, Lake Eyre was left behind. Whilst the water evaporated it also left salt crystals making Lake Eyre a salty lake it is known for today. Lake Eyre is still saltiest lake in the world due to a rate of higher evaporation than precipitation which results in salt flacks for most of the year round. |
