Wombats are Australian marsupials; they are short animals have rounded head with short ears, a muscular neck, sharp claws and short stubby strong legs. They can grow to about 1.3 metres in length and can reach a weight of 35-37 kilograms and live for approximately 27 years. Wombats live in burrows they dig underground about 30 cm long and several metres deep, they usually stay in these burrows during the day to either keep them warm or cool (depending what the season is). At night they come out for food, they usually eat grass, such as tussocky 'snow grass', wallaby grass and kangaroo grass.
In Australia there are two types or species of wombats, the common wombat. The common wombat lives in damp or wet conditions and costal forest. The other species found in Australia is the southern nose wombat which has slightly different features, larger ears and fine hairs on their snout, these wombats are usually in open dry environments. |
